How fit are you?
It’s a surprisingly difficult question to answer.
A runner might point to their 5K time.
A cyclist might use FTP.
A strength athlete might reference their squat or deadlift.
But hybrid athletes need to perform across multiple physical qualities.
Running.
Strength.
Endurance.
Power.
Work capacity.
Movement efficiency.
Recovery between efforts.
Transitions.
So how should hybrid fitness be measured?
At 8ROX, we’re developing an answer.
8PI — the 8ROX Performance Index.
What is 8PI?
8PI is being developed as a performance scoring system for hybrid athletes.
The objective is to move beyond one-dimensional measurements and create a clearer picture of overall hybrid capability.
Instead of simply asking:
“How fast can you run?”
or:
“How strong are you?”
8PI asks:
“How effectively can you combine the physical qualities required for hybrid performance?”
Why do we need another performance metric?
Because hybrid fitness isn’t one thing.
Consider two athletes.
Athlete A:
- Excellent runner
- Average strength
- Average station performance
Athlete B:
- Average runner
- Excellent strength
- Excellent stations
They might produce similar race times.
But their training requirements are completely different.
Giving both athletes the same programme makes little sense.
The first athlete may need more strength and station development.
The second may need improved running economy and aerobic development.
The result alone doesn’t reveal that.
A performance profile can.
The 8PI performance model
The 8ROX Performance Index is designed around the different qualities that contribute to hybrid performance.
The exact model can continue evolving as the 8ROX performance dataset grows, but the core philosophy is simple:
Measure the athlete, not just the result.
An 8PI profile may include areas such as:
Running
How effectively can you run at the speeds required for hybrid racing?
Engine
How well can you sustain repeated high-output work?
Strength
Do you possess sufficient strength for the demands of sleds, carries and loaded movement?
Station efficiency
How effectively can you complete functional race movements?
Transition efficiency
How much time and energy do you lose moving between disciplines?
Hybrid performance
How effectively do all of these abilities work together?
One score. Multiple dimensions.
The goal is to create an overall score while retaining the detail behind it.
For example:
8PI: 78
- Running: 83
- Engine: 81
- Strength: 75
- Station Efficiency: 79
- Transition Efficiency: 64
Immediately, the athlete has more information than a finishing time alone provides.
Their biggest weakness isn’t running.
It isn’t necessarily strength.
It’s transition efficiency.
That can influence their next training block.
Your biggest weakness can be your biggest opportunity
Athletes naturally enjoy training what they’re already good at.
Strong athletes often enjoy strength work.
Runners enjoy running.
But your largest performance improvement may come from somewhere else.
8PI is designed to make those opportunities easier to identify.
Imagine improving your weakest category from 64 to 74 without sacrificing your strongest areas.
Your overall hybrid capability changes.
That’s intelligent training.
8PI shouldn’t stay static
Fitness changes.
Your performance score should change too.
- Training block
- ↓
- Testing
- ↓
- 8PI assessment
- ↓
- Identify weakness
- ↓
- Targeted training
- ↓
- Retest
- ↓
- Updated 8PI
Over time, athletes can see their performance profile evolve.
That makes fitness measurable.
Beyond HYROX results
Although HYROX performance can provide extremely useful data, the long-term concept for 8PI is broader.
An athlete shouldn’t necessarily need a race result before understanding their hybrid fitness.
8ROX can use structured fitness tests and performance inputs to establish an athlete profile.
That means someone entering hybrid training could establish a baseline.
Train.
Retest.
And quantify improvement.
Imagine opening your 8ROX profile
Instead of simply seeing workouts, you see:
YOUR 8PI
82
- Running — 86
- Engine — 83
- Strength — 79
- Stations — 81
- Transitions — 72
Biggest opportunity: Transition Efficiency
Then your training recommendations can respond to your profile.
That’s where performance measurement becomes genuinely useful.
From generic training to intelligent training
Most training programmes begin with:
Here’s the workout.
We want 8ROX increasingly to begin somewhere else:
Here’s the athlete.
Understand the athlete.
Identify the requirement.
Then prescribe the training.
8PI can become the performance layer connecting:
- Testing
- Race results
- Training
- Coaching
- Nutrition
- Recovery
- Performance tools
within one 8ROX ecosystem.
The future of hybrid performance is measurable
Hybrid fitness is evolving rapidly.
Training is becoming more sophisticated.
Athletes are becoming faster.
Data is becoming more important.
We believe the next step is helping athletes understand what their data actually means.
That’s what 8PI is being built to do.
Measure. Understand. Improve.
